Saturday proved to be a good day for our boys!! They proved to themselves that they can play with the top D-3 teams in the country and our nemisis RPI.
Blair Veenema pitched a great game in game 1, but the bats could not string together enough to score. We managed only 5 hits against RPI'S ace Joe Zongol. We had a chance in the 6th inning with 2 hits and a hit by pitch in the inning, but some poor base running cost us an opportunity to get back in the game with the score 1-0. RPI scored 2 more runs in the top of the seventh to finish us off. The 3-0 score was respectable, but did not foreshadow what was to come in game 2.
In game 2, a must win in most people's minds, UR exploded for 15 runs in a 15-4 victory!!
The boys had a total of 16 hits, with Frank Infurna, Dan Brien, and Andy Cannon leading the way with 3 hits each.
We scored 1 run in the 2nd, and RPI answered with 1 in the 4th. We scored 2 runs in the 5th, but RPI answered with a run in the 6th to cut the lead to 3-2.
Then UR went to work. With 1 out, Cannon singled, Kahovec reached on an error, and Vanderstyne singled. Bases loaded with 1 out, which is a situation that we haven't capitalized on enough this season. Brien singled to score 2, Shane singled to score 1, Infurna singled to reload the bases, Bard singled to score 2, Kloc was hit by a pitch to reload the bases, Fuke was hit by a pitch to score 1, Cannon struck out to record the 2nd out, Kahovec doubled to clear the bases, 3 runs scored!! Vanderstyne flied out to left to end the inning. 9 runs and 7 hits!!!!! There were some great at bats in the inning, and what was great to see was several of the singles shot through the right side of the infield, the boys taking what the pitcher gave them and going with it.
RPI answered with 2 runs in the top of the 7th inning to close the gap to 12-4.
In the 8th, UR added more. Bard walked, Kloc singled, Fuke flied out to left center deep enough to allow Bard to move to 3rd. Cannon singled scoring 1, Kahovec was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Vanderstyne popped up for the 2nd out and then Brien reached on an error by the shortstop scoring another run and keeping the bases loaded. Cannon then score on a wild pitch to close out the scoring.
Pete McEneaney pitched very well again and got the win to even his record at 3-3. Steve Guzski did well in relief, coming off an arm injury and Gabe Chodak and John Fishback finished it off by closing the door on RPI in the last 2 innings.
Sunday's games rained/snowed out, Tuesday @ Cortland looks doubtful at this moment.
I hope everyone has a great week, see those of you travelling at Vassar next weekend!!
