We need RPI and St Lawrence to lose

For us to win the Liberty League a few things have to happen specifically RPI cannot do better that .500 in their series against Vassar. Similarly, St L cannot do better than .750 against Clarkson.
The easiest way to understand the standings is to look at total points (my term) i.e. a series against an opponent is assigned 1,000 points. As of Monday April 30, we have 4,250 points and we are done for the year. The percentage of .708 is computed as 4,250 divided by 6 opponents = 708.
RPI has 3,750 and they have one more series against Vassar. RPI could pick up as many as 1,000 points or as low a zero depending on how they do vs. Vassar. St L has 3,500 points and they have one more series against Clarkson. Our best hope is for Vassar to take game one against RPI and have a rain out the balance of the series. That would leave RPI with 3,750. Likewise we need Clarkson to take .750 this weekend (i.e. 3-1 ) against StL.

Bottom line...it will be difficult to finish first in the regular season, but it can happen. Regardless of where the playoffs are held, we will win the playoffs.

Liberty League Standings

On Sunday a number of us were discussing the standings and how they are computed. I called the Liberty League person (who happens to work at St Lawrence University …which is suspect!) and found out. They take what we did against each league opponent and compute using 1000 as denominator. i.e. we were 500 against Skidmore (1-1)and 750 against Vassar (3-1).They then add up the above and divide by the number of teams we played. In summary we are 500 Skidmore, 1000 Clarkson, 750 Union, 500 RPI and 750 Vassar. Total 3,500 divided by 5 different opponents =700. Bottom line, if we sweep St L we win the league. If we don’t we need to take at least 3 from St L and then the next weekend we need Clarkson to take 2 against StL for us to win the league. The fact that St L played only 2 games against each of Skidmore and Vassar and won all 4 games …hurt us.

Vassar - 3-1

We finally got baseball weather, maybe even warmer than Florida!! We took 3 of 4 from Vassar. Their 1st League win, ouch! I hope that doesn't come back to haunt us. Again, we had good parental support, Thanks to all who made the trip. The field was in great shape, it was a minor league field used for the New York-Penn league during the summer. Overall, we played well, but could have hit better. Devin Shane seemed to be zoned in, with a couple of big hits! Defense was and continues to be outstanding! Pitching also remains a strong point with this team!

There were some questionable calls on the part of the umpires on both days, it gave those of us there plenty to talk about!!

Thanks again to all the parents who are supporting the team, I know that the boys appreciate it!!

NCAA D-3 baseball poll

The NCAA D-3 Baseball poll is out and Rochester is mentioned at the bottom as receiving votes and named on more than 1 ballot. We are currently ranked 3rd in New York State. Today's game against Brockport is a very big deal as they are # 2 in NY and # 20 nationally. We also play Ithaca twice on Wednesday and with St. Lawrence this weekend, this week is shaping up to be very important in terms of postseason play!

New York poll
1. Cortland
2. Brockport
3. Rochester
4. RPI
5. Centenary
6. Ithaca
7. St. John Fisher
8. tie Plattsburgh State and Oneonta State

National poll

# 3 Cortland - rained out
# 4 Emory - split in Florida 1-1
# 20 Brockport - game on tonight!!!

Good Luck to our boys!!!!

Vassar this weekend!!

We travel to Vassar this weekend - weather reports look very promising, but I will not get my hopes up! Hope to see many of you in Poughkeepsie.

We are currently 2nd in the standings behind St. Lawrence and a successful weekend against Vassar would help to solidify our playoff position.

Go Jackets!

Split with RPI!!

Saturday proved to be a good day for our boys!! They proved to themselves that they can play with the top D-3 teams in the country and our nemisis RPI.

Blair Veenema pitched a great game in game 1, but the bats could not string together enough to score. We managed only 5 hits against RPI'S ace Joe Zongol. We had a chance in the 6th inning with 2 hits and a hit by pitch in the inning, but some poor base running cost us an opportunity to get back in the game with the score 1-0. RPI scored 2 more runs in the top of the seventh to finish us off. The 3-0 score was respectable, but did not foreshadow what was to come in game 2.

In game 2, a must win in most people's minds, UR exploded for 15 runs in a 15-4 victory!!

The boys had a total of 16 hits, with Frank Infurna, Dan Brien, and Andy Cannon leading the way with 3 hits each.

We scored 1 run in the 2nd, and RPI answered with 1 in the 4th. We scored 2 runs in the 5th, but RPI answered with a run in the 6th to cut the lead to 3-2.

Then UR went to work. With 1 out, Cannon singled, Kahovec reached on an error, and Vanderstyne singled. Bases loaded with 1 out, which is a situation that we haven't capitalized on enough this season. Brien singled to score 2, Shane singled to score 1, Infurna singled to reload the bases, Bard singled to score 2, Kloc was hit by a pitch to reload the bases, Fuke was hit by a pitch to score 1, Cannon struck out to record the 2nd out, Kahovec doubled to clear the bases, 3 runs scored!! Vanderstyne flied out to left to end the inning. 9 runs and 7 hits!!!!! There were some great at bats in the inning, and what was great to see was several of the singles shot through the right side of the infield, the boys taking what the pitcher gave them and going with it.

RPI answered with 2 runs in the top of the 7th inning to close the gap to 12-4.

In the 8th, UR added more. Bard walked, Kloc singled, Fuke flied out to left center deep enough to allow Bard to move to 3rd. Cannon singled scoring 1, Kahovec was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Vanderstyne popped up for the 2nd out and then Brien reached on an error by the shortstop scoring another run and keeping the bases loaded. Cannon then score on a wild pitch to close out the scoring.

Pete McEneaney pitched very well again and got the win to even his record at 3-3. Steve Guzski did well in relief, coming off an arm injury and Gabe Chodak and John Fishback finished it off by closing the door on RPI in the last 2 innings.

Sunday's games rained/snowed out, Tuesday @ Cortland looks doubtful at this moment.

I hope everyone has a great week, see those of you travelling at Vassar next weekend!!

UNION, RIT, THIS WEEKEND!!

Just a few random thoughts:

Last weekend @ Union - several of the boys were disappointed that we did not take all 4 games.

It was cold both days, so what else is new?? We are getting used to playing in the cold!!

Starting pitching did a great job, as did all the pitchers!!

Defense continues to be solid, offense was good, the Union pitcher who threw the 1 hitter did a good job of keeping our boys off stride by mixing up his pitches very well.

Thanks to David Little for supplying the balloons for our side bleachers!!

Thanks to the Guzskis for the tomato pie!!

Thanks to the Brocks for the cookies!!

Thanks to Nina Kahovec for putting together the candy bags!!

We played RIT twice this week and shut them out both days!! 13-0 and 2-0

Obviously, the pitching was again great and defense aided the cause. We took advantage of several errors in the 1st game and made 2 runs stand up in the 2nd game!

This weekend RPI comes to town!! This could be the biggest series of the year!! AND you guessed it the forecast is for cold and wet!! Several of us are talking about getting together somewhere after the Saturday games?? Is anyone interested?? Does anyone have a suggestion for a place?? Just an inpromptu get together!!

Congratulations to Andy Cannon, Liberty League Rookie of the week and Jay Jay Vanderstyne, who was named Rochester Area player of the week.

Hope to see many of you this weekend!!

UR travels to Union - Happy Easter!!

We will be travelling to the Schenectady area for the games against Union this weekend! Anyone else travelling??

Upstate NY weather has thrown a monkeywrench into the schedule. Hopefully, we will get the games in this weekend.

The boys played well last weekend and it was good to see Pete get a win. I talked with several Clarkson parents on Sunday during the rain delay, and we all seemed to be in agreement that RPI splitting with St. Lawrence was a very good thing for both UR and Clarkson. Not too many RPI fans in this group!!

We are currently 4 league games behind due to weather, and if we do not get the games in this weekend, the rest of the season will be a rescheduling nightmare. Not to mention the 2 non-league games against Brockport and St. John Fisher. I believe that Fisher is rescheduled for May 1st.

See you all soon!!

Anyone else feel the national anthem should be sung before the start of games? I think this is important and frankly it felt strange to not do so this weekend before the doubleheader. Didn't we do this last year? I always find it quite stirring to do so. Also I think it would be nice to have a flagpole and the 'Stars and Stripes' flying above the outfield wall. Would be a nice assist to gauge wind direction and velocity for the players / coaches also. If all agree I would be glad to bring this forward with U of R staff.
