Devin Shane update

What a great trip and such a great group of parents. As I sit here in NH and watch the skin continue to fall off of my forehead like snowflakes, out my window I can tell you all I'm not getting much sympathy. And, I can't believe it's over for the Shane family. As Ed said in an earlier blog, the four years of college baseball goes by twice as fast as high school...so please take as much time to enjoy it as you can. My biggest regret is not having my movie camera ready when the boy's won the fourth game against Skidmore. You would have thought they just beat the NY Yankees (do you like that Paul Tolland?) in the World Series. While my favorite parts were many: Finally seeing Jan Fuke without a coat or a sweatshirt the night it was 90 degrees, discussing whether a play was an error or not with Rich Cannon and Ed Kahovec, and hearing Paul Tolland keep the umpires in line. You may have heard that Devin was injured during the teams last practice in Florida on Sunday. As of now he is doing very well, and is scheduled for surgery some time on Monday where he will have three plates attached to his cheekbone just below his right eye. Not surprisingly he has received care and support from the players and parents that can only be likened to that of what a family would offer. I wanted to take a moment to thank not only the players and parents of the U of R Baseball Team, but the entire coaching staff, as well as Eric for the quality care they have supplied to our son. After the accident, Devin was taken to the emergency room in Altamonte Springs where X-Rays and a CT Scan was taken. They were read by Eric and the Doctors on staff, and the decision was immediately made that the risks were too high for Devin to fly back to Rochester. Without hesitation, Eric and the coaching staff decided not to just put him on a train, but to rent a car and drive him back to Rochester. Eric and Coach Pfohl drove for 23 hours (Devin wasn't allowed to drive) stopping in South Carolina on Sunday night to get some sleep, (and then to see Pedro at "South of the Border") arriving on campus late Monday night. Devin saw Dr. Girrado of the Strong Hospital plastic surgery staff on Tuesday afternoon where he received the recommendation for the surgery. I just want to take a moment to thank Eric, Coach Reina, and his entire coaching staff for the care and support that was offered to Devin. I would like to let you all know that if in the unlikely circumstance your son gets injured, he is in no better hands than the coaching staff and Eric. These people offer the care and support that would be considered at the "Mom" level." I'll send pictures soon, as well as let you know how the surgery turns out. Go Jacket's!!!!!!

Larry and Lynne,

We were sick when we heard about Devin. We struggle to understand why a bad thing like this can happen to such a great young man(and family). He is in our thoughts and prayers, and knowing what he's made of we are hopeful to see him finish his UR career the way it should be...on the field, throwing out a runner, calming a pitcher, driving the ball to the gap.

If there is any way that we can help, please don't hesitate a second to call. We're baseball "family".

Fondly, Steve and Beth

Devin has been in our thoughts and prayers every day since we heard about the injury, and we will continue to wish for his quick recovery. We didn't actually meet Devin in Florida, but Nick has told us how much he respects Devin as both a person and a player.
Please continue to let us know how he is doing. Our thoughts are with his family also.
We had an amazing time on the Spring trip. Thanks to all for welcoming us so completely, and for the incredible support of the new players. Of all the overwhelming positive aspects of the week, the thing that stands out the most is the character of the players, and we are grateful that our son has the opportunity to play with them. Any or all of them are welcome at our home on Long Island any time!
(And yes, the fourth game against Skidmore was our favorite game too!)

We also wish for the best for Devin, a speedy recovery, and good health in the future. Larry and Lynne - we are in town, so if there is anything Devin needs, please let us know! We will be very happy to assist in any way possible.

I also want to echo the comments about the coaching staff and Eric on the medical staff. All of our sons are in very good hands when it comes to anything of a medical nature. We have had some experience in this, so I speak from a personal point of view in regards to the coaching and medical staff. They are top notch and focus on the issue as though it is their son. They care for the person as a person first and a baseball player second! You would not get the level of care or caring at most other institutions. There are some things more important than winning and losing, maybe not many, but when it comes to our sons and their health, they are in exceptionally good hands!!

Once again, great job Eric, Joe, and the rest of the staff, you are to be commended for your caring for all of our sons!!
