Info about the trip for anyone who may have missed it:
For the weekend series against Skidmore, the team is staying at:
The Best Western Inn
St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport
3655 Hospitality Lane at Ulmerton Road
Clearwater, Florida 33762
Saturday and Sunday are 2 games each day, the first game is 7 innings followed by the second game of 9 innings, with Monday being the makeup day in case of rain. This is the regular Liberty League format. These games against Skidmore do count for our League standings. It is easier to get them in on the trip, rather than trying to get them in during March in upstate New York. The games will be played at Miller Huggins Field - 1320 5th St. North - St. Petersburg, FL. If the games are completed on Sunday, the team will depart Monday morning for Altamonte Springs and will practice Monday afternoon. If rain forces the team to play on Monday, they will depart after the conclusion of the games.
The team will then move to the UAA hotel - The Clarion Inn - formerly the Holiday Inn in Altamonte Springs, mention that you are a parent of a UAA tournament player for the $93 rate.
Several parents have stayed where the team stays, while others have found alternate places to stay. Gretchen Brocks found a hotel that shares the parking lot with the Best Western for around $50 on priceline, name your own price.
The UAA Tournament is played in Sanford, and there are a few hotels that are closer to the stadium than where the boys stay - I think in Lake Mary for example. It really depends on how close you want to be to the kids and/or your tolerance for a hotel full of UAA Baseball and Softball teams. The UR girls softball team also plays in their UAA tournament in a complex just up the street from the Clarion Hotel.
For all of the baseball nuts in the group, there is plenty of spring training action for the major leagues - check your favorite team's website for details. We actually watched the UR team play 2 games in Sanford and then drove to Tampa to see the Yankees play that night. Now that was a good day!
In addition - Disney World, Sea World, Universal Studios, etc are in Orlando. Or you can just relax by the pool or with a good book!
I hope that this helps you plan your Florida trip in support of the team. It looks like a great turnout again this year, I'm looking forward to it!!!
Only 18 days until Opening Day!
See you at the ballpark!
